The CON offers a full range of nursing training programs, from bachelor to doctoral programs, and provides undergraduate and graduate students with both theoretical and practical learning environments in order to meet future challenges. Accordingly, faculty members are required to have clinical teaching experience as well as attend seminars, workshops and conferences in and beyond the college to keep a breadth of the latest knowledge and professional skills. To assist faculty members in designing courses that are informed by global trends and include elements of the arts and humanities, the CON has hosted several seminars, workshops, and conferences in nursing and other fields; for example, a presentation on the paintings of van Gogh from a medical perspective. In addition, the CON annually hosts an international conference which brings experts, healthcare professionals, and researchers together to share their experiences and views. Through these activities, both faculty members and students are exposed to international trends and ideas. Students can also broaden their international understanding through an elective course, International Internship in Nursing, which includes a practicum in other countries such as the USA or Japan. Another important learning opportunity is available through the Group Objective Structured Clinical Examination (GOSCE) course, which is jointly offered by the CON and other colleges and schools at TMU. Students learn communication and teamwork skills, and have first-hand experience working cooperatively with other interdisciplinary team members.
For the nursing profession and nursing education, according to WHO, this understanding has two major implications: 1) Nurses are expected to use knowledge from several disciplines to treat patients, and 2) A coordinated interprofessional approach is needed to deliver quality care. In response to this challenge, nursing education must advance interprofessional education (IPE) in order to meet the demand for safe, high quality, and patient-centered health care service and prepare nurses to fulfill their expanding role. Not only GOSCE course, CON also provides IPE online courses with partner institutions such as Eastern Virginia Medical School as well as interdisciplinary courses at Taipei Medical University.
