The CON places great emphasis on research performance and academic achievement. Faculty members have led many outstanding research projects, which have been reported in national and international journals and conferences.

Three research groups have teamed up in a variety of areas including cancer, cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation, and older people’s care. Faculty members have received a number of research grants from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Education, National Health Research Institutes, Yuan General Hospital as well as from our three affiliated hospitals (Taipei Municipal Wan-Fang Hospital, Taipei Medical University Hospital, and Taipei Medical University - Shuang Ho Hospital). Additional funding for our research has been provided by Chimei Foundation Hospital, Cathay General Hospital, and Shin Kong. New faculty members are also able to apply to the Taipei Medical University’s New Faculty Research Fund.

Other research grants have been awarded by the Department of Health, the Ministry of the Interior, the National Health Research Institute, the Bureau of Health Promotion and other related organizations. In addition, several student projects supervised by faculty members have received research funding from the National Science Council over the past five years.With the total number of funding awarded, this represents an outstanding achievement in comparison with other nursing colleges in Taiwan.

Our emphasis on research and academic presentation has resulted in a strong track record of published work in a number of highly rated science citation index / social science citation index journals. These publications represent a sustained and significant contribution to nursing knowledge and evidence-based nursing.

Mind-Body Research Team

The Mind-Body Research Team focuses on the connection between thoughts, behaviors, emotions, environmental influences and biology. We seek to address the questions that are centered on the connection between mind and body.

These include:

1) The influence of psychological stress on physical and mental health.

2) The risk or protective factors for stress-related illnesses.

3) The beneficial effects of mind-body interventions on health outcomes and quality of life.

4) The potential mechanisms and pathways underlying the efficacy of mind-body interventions.

Neurobiology and the immune system as key pathways linking mind and body are of potential interests. Team members included Pei-Shan Tsai, Chia-Chi Chang, Hsiu-Ju Chang, Hsiao-Yean Chiu, Kee-Hsin Chen, Shu-Yu Kuo, Hui-Chuan Huang, Chueh-Ho Lin, and Fang Liu.

Dr. Pei-Shan Tsai, the head of the laboratory, focuses her research on the link between stress‐response systems and chronic illnesses and outcomes of nursing care of patients with stress‐related illnesses. Dr. Chia-Chi Chang has special expertise in dementia care, especially problems of feeding and nutrition. Dr. Hsiu-Ju Chang has specialized in research on determining the psychopathological predictors and the effectiveness of body-mind-spirit viewpoints on improving well-being among patients with psychiatric disorders. Dr. Hsiao-Yean Chiu’s research activities currently focus on the management of sleep disturbances and cognitive impairments in a variety of clinical and community settings. Dr. Kee-Hsin Chen focuses on knowledge translational research for promoting the multidisciplinary evidence-based practice, particularly women health. Dr. Hui-Chuan Huang’s interests are in mental health and health promotion in patients with chronic diseases. Dr. Chueh-Ho Lin focuses his research on brain-behavior relationships during a specific task. Dr. Fang Liu’s research activities focus on the effectiveness of case management on chronic illness, cancer, and dementia.

Evidence-based Translational Research Team

In the years 2018-2019, the Evidence-based Translational Research Team (EBTRT) explored the following issues:

1) Evidence-based Nursing;

2) Systematic reviews and meta-analyses;

3) Health insurance data and secondary data analysis.

The team proposes research questions from the clinical data and search for empirical key findings and its implications for clinical practice. After reviewing the evidence, these results are integrated and applied to practical treatment decisions in clinical trials to determine the effect of interventions. The team also conduct research based on National Health Insurance Research Database or other secondary data to evaluate the long-term outcome of health service.

Exercise in Elderly and Chronic Disease Research Team
With the increase of elderly population in Taiwan, healthy aging and active aging have become an important issue in recent years. Studies indicate that regular exercise can improve the quality of life and alleviate health problems and disability caused by aging. In addition, an increasing number of prospective epidemiological studies support the notion that both a physically active lifestyle and moderate to high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness independently lower the risk for various chronic diseases. Numerous studies have quantified many health and fitness benefits associated with exercise
The major focus of our studies is on the health and fitness benefits of regular physical activity and exercise. The intent of our research team is:

1) To increase both professional and public awareness of the health benefits associated with daily physical activity

2) To draw attention to the amounts and intensities of physical activity or exercise necessary to achieve the training effect among the different population, particularly with various chronic diseases and elderly populations

3) Developing novel assistive devices with multiple sensors to investigate age-related changes and intervention effects on muscle strength, coordination, motor control and gait performances for elderly adults with or without diseases.

Results of our studies may help health providers recommend appropriate exercise programs for patients with specific chronic diseases and seniors.
